Image angle is from the demolished Fifth Street Gym at the corner of Fifth Street & Washington Avenue, Miami Beach. The vision of Bermello Ajamil & Partners, this mixed-use facility in Miami Beach is the premier example of a modern building successfully designed to co-exist and compliment the Art Deco vernacular of South Beach. Its Pueblo Deco style echoes the prevailing neighborhood theme and introduced a Southwestern influence. The eight-story facility incorporates retail, restaurant and office use. A parking garage was cleverly concealed using an exterior skin that was articulated to make it totally unidentifiable. The office building was set back from the garage to suggest a pedestrian plaza, and the design also provided an open-air colonnade for outdoor dining, people watching and access to shops. An ornamental 125-foot glass block tower was also designed to act as a beacon for the corporate headquarters of the project's developer, Thomas Kramer's Portofino Group.
